GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Cook County collects property taxes in arrears—current tax bills reflect last year's assessments. The practice was introduced during the Great Depression to ease financial pressure on property owners and keep funding steady for schools, police and fire services.  Journal & Topics Media Group
  • In Illinois, state lawmaker Sen. Steve Stadelman filed a bill to require data centers to report their annual water and power use with fines for noncompliance — the measure aims to prevent projects from overloading the grid and raising rates for residents. If approved, companies will start providing this data next spring as lawmakers work to balance economic benefits with environmental safety.  The Daily Herald
  • JAWA workers completed repairs on the 90-inch Lake Michigan water main near the I-90 tollway and Elmhurst Road on Saturday — water service returned to normal after Elk Grove Village and nearby communities switched to alternative water on Tuesday, April 1.  Journal & Topics Media Group
  • Cook County’s top prosecutor Eileen O’Neill Burke said she does not believe Chief Cook County Judge Timothy Evans can safely run the electronic monitoring program — citing a lack of properly trained staff and the inability of probation officers to arrest violators — and has told her lawyers to object to its use. The program moved from the sheriff’s office to the Adult Probation Department and now faces challenges with staffing and resources.  Daily Herald

HEALTH NEWS

  • Six measles cases in Indiana have been confirmed and linked, raising concern as the outbreak nears Chicago. Doctors and the Illinois Department of Public Health urge everyone to check their vaccination status—vaccination is the best defense against the virus.  CBS News Chicago

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Construction of a new 301-unit, 8-story mixed-use building at Algonquin and Arlington Heights roads has been moving briskly—work can be seen nearly every day except weekends—and when completed it will include apartments, retail space, and amenities like an outdoor pool, spa, dog park, golf simulator, and fitness center. The project will also convert a nearby office into medical offices and relies on $17.8 million in tax increment financing toward its $130 million cost.  Journal & Topics Media Group
