EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Jan. 22, the Illinois State Board of Education required District 211 to improve discipline practices after noting disparities between Caucasian students and students of color; the district submitted its (Disproportionality in Discipline Plan) and will be reviewed over the next three years.  Journal & Topics Media Group
  • District 59 board approved Brett Gallini as the new superintendent on Jan. 28 and his term will begin on July 1 — his three-year contract runs through June 30, 2029, with a $240,000 base salary and full benefits following community input.  Journal & Topics Media Group

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Indiana State Senate approved a bill creating a Northwest Indiana Stadium Authority that could fund a new Chicago Bears stadium. Meanwhile, Arlington Heights officials push for a mega projects bill to support Bears development while the state House vote remains pending.  CBS News Chicago

SPORTS NEWS

  • IHSA boys wrestling state playoffs assignments have been released for Journal-area teams; the Rolling Meadows Individual Regional will take place at Forest View Educational Center (2121 S. Goebbert Rd. in Arlington Heights) on Saturday, Jan. 31 and features teams from Hersey, Glenbrook South, Prospect, Rolling Meadows and Loyola Academy.  Journal & Topics Media Group
  • On Thursday, Jan. 29, the Girls Catholic Athletic Conference announced awards for the 2025-26 girls basketball season with five Journal-area players earning all-conference honors (Loyola Academy is the No. 1 seed while Resurrection is the No. 11 seed).  Journal & Topics Media Group
